The Story of Toms Shoes

Inspired by the Alpargata shoes that Argentine farmers have been wearing for over 100 years, Toms shoes have made their name known to the world since 2006. Founder Blake Mycoskie witnessed the hardships of children growing up without shoes on a trip to Argentina in 2006. Wanting to help them, Mycoskie creates a shoe brand called Toms Shoes. In this article, we will take a look at what kind of activities TOMS does together with you and take a look at what is being done to protect nature and to help people who are in need.

“TOMS' mission is to use business to improve lives. This core value is embedded in everything we do. We believe in partnering with others who share these values and who conduct business ethically.”

TOMS

One of the steps to be taken by TOMS is the glasses charity campaign. TOMS shoes have already sent shoes to more than 50 million poor children. It has graced the feet of more than 360,000 people and sent clean water to six countries for more than 250,000 weeks. Additionally, in 2015, it launched its bag collection to the markets. With every bag purchased, poor expectant mothers are offered the chance to have a safe birth. Then the brand continues to help both the local people and the needy with the sale of glasses and coffee.

Now, TOMS provides clean water assistance to the regions in need for every coffee it sells in different countries, provides prescription glasses for each eyeglasses, even cataract surgery assistance, and provides a healthy birth with every 'life-saving bag'.

TOMS As An Eco-Friendly Company

One of the other issues TOMS values is nature and its protection. Drawing a new role for itself in this sense, TOMS now includes nature while planning the process of its products to contribute to sustainability. Now, let's take a look at how the firm is focused on making products, which is committed to promoting sustainable practices in key areas of our business over the next five years.

From Nature to Customer

Taking steps in this direction, TOMS invests ⅓ of our profits in grassroots efforts such as organizations that create change at the local level and accelerate progress from scratch, and utilizes nature-based resources in its products. For this reason, it is witnessed that TOMS have been focused on some points.

  • The brand uses the term “earthwise” to include more products based on earth-friendly materials and processes.
  • By working to reduce waste and energy use and by exploring an end-of-use program for the shoes, the brand strives to increase B Corp environmental score.
  • It aims to expand the use of sustainable cotton by sourcing 100% sustainable cotton by 2025.
  • The brand tries to source 100% of the packaging from sustainably managed forests.
  • Most packaging is made from 80% recycled materials.
  • The company's carbon footprint is measured regularly and improvements are made year after year.
  • Progress is reported in the annual impact report.
  • In the meetings, new ideas for sustainability are tried to be discovered.

Earthwise By TOMS

The brand doesn't use the term "earth-friendly" often. Because for a product to be environmentally friendly and sustainable - or to be considered earthwise - the brand believes that at least one of its main components must contain a minimum of earth-friendly materials. In line with the standards of earthwise, TOMS provides the listed materials to be used:

  • Eco materials are used for footwear.
  • Recycled polyester is made from post-consumer plastic bottles via a process that’s light on water usage and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Plant dye process uses pigments derived from natural botanicals.
  • Organic cotton is grown without toxic chemicals or genetically modified seeds.
  • Lyocell, which is used for some materials, is created from wood pulp that’s sourced from responsibly managed forests.
  • Green EVA outsoles are derived from sugarcane – a renewable resource that removes carbon from the air.
  • Hemp, linen, and jute are preferred eco fibers because they consume less water than traditional fibers and require less chemicals to grow.
  • Footwear insoles are lightweight, breathable and made with more sustainable materials, like recycled rubber.
  • The strobel board, the part of the shoe attaching the insole and outsole, is made with recycled polyester.
  • Mineral glass lenses are made with natural silica and soda ash.
  • Bioplastic frames are made from 100% biodegradable plant-based material.

TOMS And More

TOMS is one of the world's most known environmentally friendly brands and companies. The brand not only contributes to sustainability at every stage of production and consumption, but also does everything it can to make the world a better place by producing one more pair for every shoe purchased. TOMS also works on providing basic needs such as clean drinking water, eye health services, safe birth kits to communities in need. While contributing to the creation of a more equal and just world by helping as many people as possible, it produces shoes and shoe boxes from 100% recyclable and sustainable materials, making production respectful to the planet. TOMS is concrete proof that today's consumers don't have to choose between 'looking good' and 'being good'.

If you also want to work with a company like TOMS that is reliable, experienced and based on sustainability, you can follow all these brands on mimoni.com and support nature protection. We hope that you do not forget nature while choosing products that suit your style.
